Automatic transmission problem

Asked by Dec 25, 2012 at 07:22 PM about the 2002 Hyundai Sonata GLS

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My automatic transmission will jerk, the check engine light will come on, I lose 1st and 4th gear.  If I turn
off the car, and restart it, the check engine will stay on, but I regain 1st and 4th gear.  It only does this
occasionally, and I am wondering if it is something electronic that is the problem, or something
mechanical causing this.

I would start with the electrical. Clean and tighten the battery connections. Read the voltage of the battery with the engine running. It should be around 13.5-14.5 volts. Get the codes read and find out why the check engine light is coming on.

Same problem Hyundai fixed in 30 min , it was a sensor they wouldn't say which one (warranty) same problem though as you.

Also, sometime it will not start. I had to hold the ignition switch on until it finally start. It has plenty of gas, so I know that not the problem. Are the two related?
