Won't move in Drive or Reverse

Asked by May 28, 2016 at 08:59 PM about the 2000 Ford Explorer XLT 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2000 ford explorer won't move in Drive or
reverse. I can put it into 1st or 2nd gear and it will
drive with those.
Transom fluid doesn't look good, not brown but not
like it should either.

Sounds like you have a handful of problems there, smell the fluid, if it smells burnt chances are high that it is already too late and the tranny is on it's last legs, but if it doesn't then you might be able to make it work a while longer. I recommend that you take it to a good tranny shop, they should be able to plug in and test the solenoids and pressures and then give you a better idea of what it is going to take to fix it, could be the solenoid pack, the gear selector switch or even the TCM itself. Is there any way that his truck would be stuck in Anti-Tow mode thru the gear selector?
