My 2000 Ford Explorer Just quit

Asked by Jan 31, 2015 at 11:12 AM about the 2000 Ford Explorer XLS 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

While leaving work last night, My explorer quit while going about 25 mph out of the lot. I costed into another lot and it wouldn't. I replaced plugs wires last July, It will turn over but won't start. Before it stalled the check engine light kicked on and the engine rocked like it wasn't getting any gas. Any Help

You need to find out what is missing. Do you have fuel, do you have spark, do you have compression? Could be many things like fuel pump relay, fuel pump, fuel filter, crank sensor, battery cable, battery or many other problems. Is the check engine light on? If so what are the codes if any?

Your timing belt is gone.?

@carsten this Explorer and every Explorer has a timing chain NOT a belt.

I think it might be something in the fuel system, maybe a pump, because it would sit for about an hour and fire up and run for a half minute. Are there still fuel filers on this model and is it internal In the tank) or external off a line? it's a 3.8 Push rod not Overhead cam

Should be a fuel filter possibly on the frame underneath. Trace the fuel lines from the tank and you will find it. 3.8 pushrod motor has a timing chain.

Thanks Bob. when i had the problem it fired as you saw earlier, so I'm thinking fuel

The fuel filter on the 99 is on the frame of the vehicle about mid way between the front of the front drivers side door and the back of it. There is a six buck tool you have to purchase to remove it.

Check the fuel pressure with a gauge made for the purpose. it cost maybe 50 bucks for a decent one. The "how to" is simple and can be obtained from the net.
