How long should/would it take to swap out the engine, and replace the timing belt and water pump? I'm getting estimates in a wide range of times/$$$

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

It's a 2.7L 6 cyl in a 2005 Tucson.  I have a replacement engine located, with 40K.  Included will be replacement of timing belt and water pump on the replacement engine.  The labor estimates are coming in between $750 and $1200.  What would be a reasonable $/hour, and total hour expectation?

I see no one has answered your questions yet. It may be because the hourly rates for mechanics who can do the work you need vary wildly depending on where you live. It's also possible that unless someone has had the exact, same work you're wanting to have done, they can't take a stab at how long it should take. My suggestion would be that you check the labor rates per hour at a couple of local Hyundai dealers, then at a couple of reputable local mechanic's shops, to get an idea of what local mechanical work costs per hour. Beyond that, I would demand references from prior customers about the quality, charges and services they experienced at each place that's providing you quotes. There's nothing as good as real life references. Check their memberships in places like the Better Business Bureau, and creds like training certificates etc. Are they Master Mechanics? Lastly, I never go with the lowest or the highest estimate. Not an answer to what you asked, but info that I hope is helpful in other ways. Good luck. :)
