2000 Ford Explorer - After jump start, vehicle surges, idiot lights come on, will not restart

Asked by SouthernTrouble75 Jul 10, 2017 at 01:58 PM about the 2000 Ford Explorer XLS

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2000 Ford Explorer XLS. It has just uneder 300,000 miles (I love
this Explorer!). Just replaced battery not 3 months ago. My daughter got
home from work, I hopped in to go to little store that's 2 miles up the road.
Come out, truck won't start.  (No signs/symptoms of any type prior). I get a
friend to jump start truck and as I'm driving home it starts physically
surging. A goofy way to explain it is if there was a ghost forcibly taking it
from neutral to drive, flooring the gas then not. Never had any issue like this
ever. I've had folks say its anything from a sensor (many different sensors
suggested, to battery terminals to the transmission). Out of everything I
have found, nothing has described issues with the battery and surging
together.  Anyone ever experienced this?

Has the fuel filter been changed in 300,000 miles? It's located under the car on the frame near the drivers side door. Looks like a half size beer can. You can probably change it yourself with a five buck special tool to remove it. You can also check the fuel pressure at the rail on top the engine. If the fuel pump is going out it could cause the same problem. The fuel pump is in the fuel tank and not easily serviceable. The tool for checking fuel pressure is about 20 bucks.
