car revs up but doesn't go faster when pressing on gas

Asked by Megan Apr 19, 2020 at 02:15 AM about the 1992 Honda Accord LX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

when i drive my 94 auto accord sometimes it would rev up but not go any
faster. then recently when i drove it it did the same thing but died on me. i
tried starting it again and everything but would not go into drive or reverse. it
sat for a couple weeks and i started it regularly then one day it wouldn't start.
the hazards randomly went off without turning them off and so did the alarm.
what could be wrong with it? i have seen many posts about it being a
clogged line in the transmission but want to see if it would be the actual
transmission itself. checked the battery but no longer starts up. i know its not
the battery because the lights wouldn't work if it was dead neither would the
radio. anyone know what it could be or how to find out?

Your battery is weak, that is why you can't start the car. Test it to see if you have over 12V. You can still have enough battery power to work the lights and radio but not start the car. Your other issue on revving when idling and not going into gear is transmission related. Classic symptoms of a worn out transmission. In most cases your looking at rebuilding the transmission, so that would cost a couple thousand and I would not consider investing that amount of money into a 26 year old vehicle unless you really love it.
