My 94 honda accord is making a ticking/knocking noise in the engine and when I give it gas to accelerate, it wants to die on me. Could it be the lifter and if so, how do I fix it and how much?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I don't think the head is cracked because
the oil isn't milky. The oil however is very
black and runny. Would bad oil cause
damage to the lifter?

If the oil is that bad it maybe already too late, oil is the life blood of an engine, it needs changed regularly, you can try changing the oil and filter, and put in some Lucas oil additive and see what happens, but I think your in for at minimum a top end rebuild, rough estimate around a grand. If it is too far gone you might consider a good used engine if your budget is tight. I have had good luck with a supplier in the next county, but I always pull the pan and check the rod and crankshaft bearings before installing the engine. HTH
