In the engine well is a round black plastic ball looking thing with a small hose--WHAT IS IT??

This sit above the fuel canister on the drivers side. Have no idea what it is used for. Pictures I have seen have this in them but do not denote what it is or what it does.

I want to say it is a vacuum storage (accumulation) canister. Sounds silly but that's what I think it is. Mine is a black plastic ball, three inches is diameter and has like one or two vacuum hoses plugged into it.
