Evap canister solenoid

Asked by Jonnymo Mar 16, 2018 at 05:33 PM about the 2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i Sport

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Is the Evap solenoid really up under the
rear diff?  My mechanic just charged me
over $250.00 in labor because she claims
the rear diff had to be dropped out of the
way.

Now I wonder if I have a leg to stand on now that it’s been paid in full or am I SOL?

Hmmm. It seems that several components are "upside down" from Subaru tradition with the newer (2012-2016) Imps, like the CVT on some of them. I'll have to give the benefit of the doubt to your wrench here, but I wonder if access from above was possible. 2012 Imps have had other goofy one-offs, like steering clock springs, indicating redesign problems, so I hope you'll be okay ongoing. If upon further inquiry you find that another access for the repair was possible then you should argue for partial repair labor refund, as there's no actual monetary loss at her end. Goofy problem that probably pissed her off and just took "the damned diff down" to get it over with. Sorry.

That’s all the peace of mind I needed. I’ll just put this issue to bed and move on. Thank you!

You're welcome. At your Imp's age (6 yrs) I'd suggest draining and refilling its CVT ($80) and maybe swapping out its iridium plugs ($125) next year. They do NOT "eat" plugs, but they're getting a bit old. The failure rate of the CVTs suggest that keeping the fluid clean is good prophylaxis.

I have a 2012 impreza and not happy with the quality. Thought subarus were supposed to be high quality, but I replaced one vapor canister solenoid last year, and the check engine light is already back on again - same code. Also replaced wheel bearing assemblies both rear wheels and now one of them needs it again. Multiple rotor replacements on brakes. Maybe 2012 impreza just the weak model in the lineup, or bad year for them, but I'm not impressed - going Toyota next car.
