What is wrong with my car?? Mechanics can't figure it out!!

Asked by May 18, 2015 at 12:55 PM about the 1998 Honda Civic LX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car stalls and dies and won't start sometimes. A few times it has died while driving
but usually its when I drive and then turn it off that it won't start. The check engine
light comes on, the main relay doesn't click, the fuel pump doesn't chime up, and it
just turns over. However, if I let it set for a little, it'll start. I have replaced the engine,
alternator, idle air control valve, spark plugs, distributor cap, fuel filter, and more I can't
think of. I have been told by friends that it could be the main relay but I've also been
told it could be the ignition. Please help me I'm tired of spending money and not
getting the problem fixed. And I've had this problem for about a year.

First thing to do is, when it quits and won't start, find out what you DON'T have. Spark or fuel then go from there. Try spraying some starting fluid down the throttle body. If it runs a few seconds on the starting fluid it's a fuel problem. If not then it's an ignition (no spark) problem. Usually the root cause of intermittent trouble such as this is electrical. A sticking relay, poor connection, etc. HTH. -Jim
