Clicking noise from parking brake/transmission while in park and tapping brake pedal

Asked by WKM Apr 05, 2011 at 12:38 PM about the 2000 Ford Contour 4 Dr SE Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2000 Contour, 4 cyl.

Background:
Check engine light recently came on, car drives normal however there is some occasional lag when accelerating and slow shifting.  Also brakes are hard as a rock after first using them when shifting out of park. (i.e. when applying the brakes it's like stepping on a rock, then brakes work normal).

This morning I noticed that when the car is running and in Park, if I tap the brakes there is a clicking noise from the hand brake/transmission area between the front seats on the floor.

Car brakes normally once in motion, only when coming out of Park does it act odd.

Any thoughts?
