you probably have carbon buildup in the cap. the spark is arcing on the carbon. changing the cap and rotor should fix the problem. I would go ahead and do a full tune-up while you are at it.
I'm surprised it even ran, do what madmopar said but do it quick, there are small expensive electrical components inside that distributor that don't like stray high energy voltage.
