I'm having some sort of electrical issue with my
2016 Honda CRV Touring, 42K miles...or maybe
it's just the battery? Here's the highlights:

-Over the past month it's not started 6-7 times,
each time I was able to jump it with little effort.

-When trying to start in these instances, I get the
classic clicking and flashing in the dash.

-I took it to Advanced Auto Parts, and the battery
tested out fine. They tested it shortly after I jumped
it, then I drove it around for 45 minutes to get it
fully charged and we ran another test and it was
still good.

-I've used my multimeter to try and determine if
there is a parasitic draw. When I test through the
negative, I initially get a 1.2 amp draw, but within
about 5 seconds the meter goes very low (not sure
if this is a faulty test...I'm no expert with
Multimeters).

-My wife made her 45 min drive home last night,
which should have fully charged it. We were
heading out again about 20 minutes after she got
home, and we had the driver's side door open for
3 min or less (dome light on) and used the power
liftgate once...then the car wouldn't start. This
seemed like an especially small amount of usage
to cause the car to not start.

Tomorrow morning I have an appointment setup to
have the electrical system looked at, but I'd rather
not pay that inspection if I don't have to. I'm
starting to think the battery may actually be bad,
despite the test saying it's good. Any thoughts or
wisdom would be much appreciated!

If possible take it to another auto parts store and have them load test it for bad cells. These testers today are very accurate. I would also do some resistance checks on your battery cables. Shouldn’t have much for a 2016.

Thanks, I think I’ll try going to autozone tonight. Last week it didn’t start after a series of short trips. A couple times it hasn’t started because of very minimal dome light/electrical usage prior to turning it on...those instances really have me thinking it’s the battery and not a parasitic drain. (Dumb question) I’ve read others say the OEM Batteries on the CRVs are underpowered. If I got a stronger battery, would it reduce the likelihood of this occurring after minimal dome light usage, etc. we aren’t the types to sit in the garage and listen to the radio or anything.

Generally OEM batteries are better. I have not heard that CRV battery concern. It could be true. Have you thought about getting an AGM battery? They are good but very expensive. I would hate for you to buy one and it not be your fix but you would know it wasn’t a battery issue. Any corrosion on terminals? Are they tight? I buy Toyotas personally and I have gotten 8 years minimum out of all my OEM batteries. Most time I have changed them just for peace of mind not that they failed. I just changed my 2011 Camry battery with an interstate brand. Car does start faster. Did it because of winter.

i am having the same issue as well with my 2016. I have been through 4 batteries since April, now they are saying it is something with the connection/cables. I have heard multiple issues on the batteries from 2015-2019 models. Unfortunately, i am past the warranty and it is costing me $600 out of pocket just to do the diagnostic testing to figure it out...

Hi there. I have a 2015 CRV. I have had 3 separate parasitic draws to the battery. each time it can be jumped but then dead again after sitting for an extended time. I had purchased a warranty with this car (it was new) so I have had all of this covered. What I did was took it to auto zone. for free they can test to see if there is a draw on the battery when the car is off. My 1st draw was the radio. they installed a new radio. Less than 1 month later another draw and it was the window switch. Less than a year later same window switch. My car has 67000 miles 4 yrs old. I am in PA. I cannot do the lemon law here because all 3 of my issues had to be before 60,000 miles. I was a few miles short this last incident. If it wasnt for my extra warranty I purchased the car would be gone! Good luck. Hope this helps someone!

I am having an issue with my honda crv 2015. The lights stay on for a long time even though the engine is off. I have to turn them off multiple of times at night. The dealer refused to diagnose the problem. They make me pay to change the light bulbs. My warranty is still active but they refused to fix it. When I am driving the headlights keep switching on and off. I don’t know what to do.. please I need an advise.

This is amazing!!! Same problem here just today . It starts up and I get 14.5 volts going to the bat. but after 30 seconds it ceases charging and battery voltage goes right down to 12.2 .So in other words something is telling the alternator the battery is fully charged and everything is okay when it's not

I bought a 2016 CRV 5 days ago. Drove it around running errands yesterday with no problem. Today it will not start. Dealer said "sounds like your battery"! I am horrified by all the battery problems I am reading about here. The car only has 19,000 miles on it. I don't have extended warranty, but was told the car is "certified". What can I do?

I am having the same battery issues with my 2016 crv. 32,000 miles. I was told that if I don’t drive it every day for a half hour or at least every other day I should get a battery tender. It happens because Honda does not put a big battery in their vehicles. I am a retired 78 year old lady. I don’t drive my car everyday and when I do, it is usually just around town which I know is not really charging it up. Anyone using a battery tender?

I have the same issue with a 2015 CRV. Things will be fine for a month or two, and then overnight, the battery is dead. (I've checked that there are no lights left on.) I'm beginning to think it is an intermittent parasitic draw. I've noticed sometimes when I get in the car, the power seat has moved. (I do not have memory seats, so it's moving on its own.) I am wondering if there is a glitch in the computer that activates a circuit. I'm starting to keep track by checking the battery voltage every morning and correlate it with things like the seat spontaneously having moved over night. I'm not sure what I can do with the information since Honda Service is very resistant to suggestions from customers. Their default position is that the customer is an idiot. Just tell them it needs a new battery. (Even if the old one is only 2 months old.)

I have the same problem with my 2016 CR-V. I put in a new battery and the problem still exists. I had two incidents in the past week where my emergency light was on for less than 5 mins while engine is off and the battery is dead. This appears to be a widespread problem with 2015/2016 CR-V. There should be a recall

2020 CRV, 500 miles, 2 months old. Battery failed twice. Dealer says everything checks out fine. Says I should drive more and/or put battery tender on it regularly. Drove last five cars the same way and never had this issue.

Not even 10,000 miles on my 2014 Civic Honda. Same damn issue!! It's been at the dealer twice. This time for a week and half. I am not bugging them, because this fixed. This should not be happening to these cars. Not sure what to do, but I can't afford another car. I thought Honda was the best but now I am sure at all. Very disappointing.

We have a 2016 CRV with same problem with battery going dead. I think we need to do a class action suit, or they need to do a recall and fix problem.

Dealing with this same problem with my 2016 CR-V as we speak. Has only 24k miles and this is 3rd battery with a 5 year warranty, 6 months old, and it's already dead. So frustrating.

I hope this helps. I am a woman and the people at the dealership keep making me think I’m crazy but I called American Honda, the head quarters and I recommend everyone call them and report this short circuiting problem and open an investigation. Gather all of your paperwork too. it’s a short circuit with the wires and something inherently wrong with how the vehicle was made. I have a 2016 HRV and if I use the parking brake when I park on a hill the car short circuits, I need a jump and then I’m good to go. I have exhausted my AAA usage this year and friends and family are tired of giving me a jump. There is also a power steering issue and that light will come on. Luckily I have an extended warranty and they have to continuously fix the problem for free. I asked the Honda dealership where I get the car service for a full, lengthy print out that has in writing the official diagnosis of the short circuit problem each time I come to bring it in. At first they didn’t want to provide it when they pulled it up on the screen. Simply hit print! American Honda’s telephone number is 1 (800) 999-1009. They told me to bring it in to the dealer a final time and they will see what is going on. They were able to also pull up my history since my car is serviced by Honda. They may either reimburse me if it’s a defect, see about permanent solutions because this is a safety issue- it did this once while I was driving the car, the steering wheel locked and my daughter was in the car with me. I started rolling down a small hill and the I could only stop the car by pulling the parking brake. Then the car did the flicking of lights and turned off. I hope they either replace the car, reimburse me or try to get me into a newer model. I refuse to let them gaslight me and tell me this car is safe when it’s not. Also see the following articles. I sent these to the dealer’s service department too so they can see that many many other people reported these issues. The wiring is just bad. I told them I want a solution that won’t be temporary and I refuse to drive an unsafe vehicle when they clearly know that this is a huge problem. I have a 2016 Honda CRV with 11,000 miles and started having battery problems in June 2020; new AGM dead in August; replaced with new AGM; dead in Nov.. I was afraid to jump start and then having it go dead on the road. Fortunately I also have a 20 year old GMC truck that works. I am an older disabled woman and bought new car and Honda due to reputation and reliability. I won't continue to go to a Honda dealer so they can! make me wait a week (they said it was cause of COVID), then take my money for a problem that they can't fix. I'ld rather put money into a new non-Honda vehicle that I can rely on. I doubt Honda will act quickly but I do thank you all for verifying that I am not nuts. I have a 2016 Honda CRV Ex-L with 55,000 miles. In the past two months, I've had a number of instances when my battery won't start. It clicks as though dead, but the lights and radio still work. Sometimes the wheel locks as well. It easily starts with a jump. The battery's been tested several places (including Honda dealership) and is still good. They told me that maybe a cell was bad and I should replace it. Also that I should weekly drive for 30 miles to keep it properly charged. But in one case the wheel locked and the battery wouldn't start immediately after a 30+ mile drive. The dealership conducted a thorough check on my car, keeping it for several days, but found nothing wrong with it. Maybe my next step is adding my info to the complaint page above.

I also have a 2016 Honda CRV and have about 34,000 miles and I have had the same issues. About 2 months ago I had driven my car about an hour away. Shut it off for no more than 10 minutes came back and it would not start. Then today I started my car this morning fine drove it down the street to get gas and went to start it nothing. I had the car turned off for less than 5 minutes. Came back home and kept the car running and when I went to start it this afternoon it would not start. Jumps fine and starts right up. Someone else mentioned their seat moving. I am convinced mine is doing the same. Brough my car into a dealership a few weeks ago explaining these issue and the guys there thought I was crazy. They tested the battery and it is perfect. Can't figure out what is going on but very frustrating.

Bought a new 2016 CRV in Feb of 2017. Two years to the week the battery failed, it was under warranty and the dealer replaced it. Then two years to the week the 2nd battery failed. No warranty coverage. I complained to deaf ears and bought a new 84 month full replacement battery not from the dealer and when replacing the Honda battery noticed it said 60 month warranty on the top of it. That's 5 years and the CRV wasn't 4 years old yet and was on its second battery (my 12 year old Chev 6.6 Duramax diesel still had its 2 original batteries), I send Honda a scalding email explaining all this and wondered if this was standard for their products? The dealer called back in a few hours and paid for my replacement battery as customer service gesture only not as a warranty issue. They know.

I bought a 2016 EXL NAVI brand new in 2016 so first time Honda and CR-V owner here. Thank you for this thread because up until now EVERYONE has treated me like I'm crazy when I tell them about this exact same issue with the clicking and the battery starting and running just fine then all of the sudden it not working in as little as 10 minutes after it's been turned off. Twice I've had to replace the battery "because in Florida the batteries drain quicker than anywhere else" and even though I got them and the alternator tested (and they were supposedly charging well) I went ahead and replaced it just to be on the safe side. The part that drives me crazy is that there is no clear rhyme or reason as to why it's happening. The first time was just over two years ago and when I replaced the battery it only did it two other times from then to last December (each time I figured it was a dead battery in the key and that seemed to help the situation so I thought nothing else of it) but December it started acting up really bad. Since the first time it happened early December it has done this at least 10 different times. My husband drives 35 miles for work each way so it's not a matter of keeping the car running for long periods of times. During the time this was happening frequently he was working 12 hour days and would often come out at dusk to find a dead battery in need of a jump. We finally relented and bought a new battery in early January and that seemed to "fix" the issue after ensuring that the alternator was once again working and charging properly. Until today when we drove a quarter mile to a restaurant down the street from the house and spent maybe an hour at the location before attempting to get back in the car to drive home. No luck. Same clicking and lights except now there were more lights on the dash and the accessories mode would kick on. Convinced that we now really had a problem we called roadside assistance only to have the tow truck driver attempt a battery jump and lo and behold we had a functional car again! To say I am aggravated with Honda is an understatement of a life time. What an absolute disappointment.

Has anyone had the battery voltage sensor replaced? It is mounted to the negative battery cable where the cable connects to the battery. My understanding is if our vehicles are jump-started and the black jumper cable is connected at the negative battery post, this sensor becomes damaged. It looses its sensitivity. Owners manual says to never put the jumper cable on neg battery post. Use a bolt on the other side of the engine as the ground. I guess this would apply to charging the battery as well.

Replace battery with group 51 battery. The factory gp 35r is to weak. Plastic box originally around my factory batt would not fit in 51 batt.

46 comments and no solution yet?? Are you guys just still driving the car with these electrical issues? I'll join the crowd, my 2016 CRV just started doing the same thing, dash lights flickering, speedo jumping around, not starting at times. I normally buy American cars and they have all been great, 250K miles, no issues. I have owned a few Toyotas, Hondas, and a Mazda. All were junk. My friends new Kia just burst into flames, burned to the ground.

Do we have any options to file case against HONDA for these issues? HONDA can not be termed as reliable brand with such insensitive customer case/ Dealerships keeping the same known issues open. I too have same battery drain issue with my 2015 Honda CRV, mine is a preowned certified car, I already have got through 4 battery replacements in 2 years. I went upto power drain tests, spend money from pocket to try and diagnose actual drain to no help. Honda dealership just tries to loot your money instead of helping resolve the issue, I am sure they would have received same complained million times, but they are in business and money is biggest factor for them over the service. I got my car tested by two independent technicians and they both found drain in CAR computer that constantly keeps eating up battery, I tried to take this same thing to dealership for testing but they did not do same tests, neither they acknowledged any form of drain. One final thing to note here that we should move away from HONDA...my friend having FORD and other brands, no matter how many days you keep your car idle their car will start just fine. If anyone has taken any Legal option to Honda please text me as I am also looking to explore legal options.

I bought a used 2016 CRV EX-L from dealer. I do have a warranty. Today I left doors open for a couple hours. Was putting cargo box on roof and just left doors open. Later I closed doors and then wanted it get in for something and the doors wouldn’t unlock (had to use real key) and no lights. I had a friend over so we jumped the battery and it started right up. He had a battery tester and my battery is fine. He gave me the portable jump start since I plan to travel. I decided to search a way to turn off electronics so battery won’t drain with doors open for long periods. Then I came across this thread and also this other one that mentions the problems. It mentions various causes and fixes for parasitic drain. I also have a 2016 Honda CRV. I bought it from the Honda Dealer on 2017 with 16000 miles on it. Now I have 39000 miles on it and just last week I replace the third battery. Two different auto parts dealers were confused with the readings and had to use two different batterie testers to give me a diagnosis, one instrument indicated that it was the alternator another one read that it was a bad battery. The alternator from the auto part dealer was about $$500.00 and most independent mechanics charge about $400.00 for labor. The dealer wants $3500.00 for the replacement. I decide to have a new battery again and so far I have driven it for almost a week with no problems. I keep my fingers cross and hope that last at least three more years. Surely I will proceed to raise my complaint to the Honda Headquarters.
