My 1973 beetle keeps overcharging and it stil uses the old power regulator what can i do?

the generator lights go of when u start the car but when u drive more than 10 min u start smelling the battery acid

Yes absolutely change out the regulator before you totally cook the battery, make sure you read the instruction carefully so you polarize it correctly. HTH

i got a new regulator but the thing keeps overheating u can barely touch it so i don`t know what i did wrong i put the green and red wire together with the red wire on the regulator and the green and blue and the black and brown.

That sounds like the battery is already fried, or you have a circuit short that is causing a full field response from the alternator, have you had the battery tested?
