Knocking could be caused by a number of problems One possibility is uneven or early combustion. It could also happen if you put the wrong octane level of gas in the car. There are also a number of mechanical problems that could cause this problem.

Does it have a metalic sound? How long has it been going on? It could be a rod or main bearing, piston slap and more.
