How many 68 convertibles were built with option as1 front seat shoulder seat belts?
They all had front outboard seat seatbelt shoulder straps. Effective January 1, 1968 they became mandatory as per Federal Regulations. The car manufacturers, in this case GM, started installing them at the beginning of the '68 model run which was actually August of '67. Be advised that children and adults under 4 feet 11 inches tall should NOT use these belts!! These people should use the lap belt ONLY! Because of the way the belt comes down across the shoulder on these people in a frontal collision their neck may be broken or they can even be decapitated!! There was originally a warning label on the strap to alert people to this. HTH. -Jim
All the option lists I have seen show just 70 built of all types. Thanks for your response Jim.
You're welcome. Glad to help. Those shoulder straps were on the option sheet as early as 1964, that I know of. Head restraints too. But hardly anyone bought them. Head restraints didn't become required until 1969. HTH. -Jim
