Possibly bent frame on Acura MDX 2016

Asked by Olimpia Mar 13, 2018 at 11:08 PM about the 2016 Acura MDX SH-AWD with Technology and AcuraWatch Plus Package

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was involved in accident where my MDX was hit
on the side, directly between front and back door.
Driver and back door are damaged, front door
opens closes fairly ok but the back door after
forcing it close still has a gap in top corner (it
doesn’t stay flush with the body of the car). When I
open the front door, there is a visible damage to the
part of the car that “holds” the back door and has
latches for front door - I would have called it a
frame, but I don’t know if technically it is a frame? Is
this part repairable? I’m waiting for the adjuster but
I would like to be prepared. When I googled “frame
repair “ I almost gave myself a heart attack, what
are the chances that insurance will opt for “fixing “
my 2 year old car’s frame? Any insight/advice will
be greatly appreciated.

Your car is a unit-body or "unibody", the only part that has a frame is the engine cradle, aka subframe, which bolts to the stamped sheet metal body shell at the firewall. A body shop can put the car on a rack to determine if it's salvageable or not, a bent unibody is usually 'totaled.' You get a check from the insurance company, the title goes to the insurance company and the car goes to a salvage lot, to either be auctioned or scrapped. It's impossible to judge if your car is scrap or not from the pic, it's not something you can do by eye anyhow, they have specialized racks for measuring and straightening cars.
