with a fuel pump in the gas tank, gasoline acts as a coolant. Running tank low often or running completely out, robs the pump of it's coolant and it can overheat causing the pump or one of its components to get damaged. Turn the ignition key to "on" to see if you can heat the fuel pump. If not, find the problem.
