Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I first got my car the side detection was working. About several months ago there were a big snow storm and my side detection module has not worked since. What can i do to fix this problem? When I turn the key on my car it says service side detection system. What can be the problem and how do I fix it without going to the dealer? I enjoyed the side detection because it save me so many times.

The warning can come on because a side detection sensor is covered in mud. I believe the sensors are in the sides of the rear bumper or just in front of it. Check these to see if it's debris. If so, knock it out with a hose and this will probably fix it. If not, it's a bad sensor and you'll have to replace it. It's not too difficult to do.

How much do you think the sensor cost and can I buy one that is used

The sensor is part of the problem for you. The other is that after replacement it has to be reprogramed and that's not something a novice can do. First, never buy a used sensor. You could buy a sensor for under $200, install it "correctly," and have a mechanic program it, but you're probably saving only a hundred bucks. Have it done right

Just like ed said module was obstructed. Make sue snap back in clip or will slide in bumper.
