2005 mini convertible top popped open after run over median.

Asked by Jun 14, 2019 at 05:08 PM about the 2005 BMW 6 Series 630i

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I accidentally ran over a median in the rain, the
convertible top popped open and would not close.
Especially on the passenger side. The top Wil not
open all the way or close. Insurance company says
normal wear and tear but why would it all of a
sudden not work?

Mini's aren't built very well, and when you remove the bracing of the hard top and add a soft top, the car becomes less stable. when you hit the median, the car bent, really. The to probably compressed at first then stretched so far that the clasps broke. That stress also damaged the mechanism, or more correctly, bent it out of line. You should see an auto body shop to determine if you have damage to the car's structure (I kinda hope you do so the Insurance company will have to cover it) then see a convertible top shop to see what's wrong there. This just might be so expensive that the insurance company will have to "total" the car and pay you off, less deductible, of course.
