Check ending light

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I own a 96 BMW z3 roadster.
My check engine light is bad. In
order to pass smog I can not have
the bad light. Is this an easy fix? I've
heard it's very expensive to just
change it. Also is it considered a
sensor or just the light?

Is the light NOT coming on at all? If so you may be able to pull the instrument cluster and change the bulb. If it's on, have the computer scanned. Most local auto parts stores will do it for free. Then post the codes and we can help further. HTH. -Jim

My problem is the opposit. Nothing is wrong with the car but the light won't go out. I can reset it but once I turn the car off and back on again the light pops back on.

Have the computer scanned and post the trouble code(s). Something has to be going on. HTH. -Jim

My sons Audi 4 check engine light is always on and the dealer says there is nothing wrong - he hasn't mentioned having trouble passing smog.
