Just bought 2015 Ford Fusion S from dealer 2 weeks ago...mold?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello,

About 2 weeks ago, I bought a used 2015 Ford Fusion from a local
dealership. I've been noticing this past week that the AC kind of smells funky
when the car first starts (usually when its sitting in the driveway and I start the
car in the morning). Today, I noticed that there were a couple of black specks
that looked like brown mold on the interior light switches/visors. In short, can
a bad cabin air filter or AC unit cause mold to appear in the proximity where
cold air is hitting? I've had the AC on high since we've had a few hot days
here in NY but I can't imagine this being normal. I plan on taking the car
tomorrow, but I could use some peace of mind. The car only has 15,000 miles
on it.

IS THE RADIATOR.FULL..SOMETIME THERE COULD BE A ANTIFREEZE FEAK IN THE DUCK WORKS...ALSO SPRAY SOME febreze INTO THE VENTS

I thought it would be the cabin air filter. So you think that's what's causing tiny mold spots to be appearing on the visors/light switch consoles? I'm pretty sure the AC was aimed in that direction as well. Thank you

It's relatively unlikely that the vents shot mold all the way out to the dome light without covering every inch of the ductwork. Mold is sticky and it would take a lot of pressure to shoot it that far. Some fords had a recall for vent odors. Caused by plugged evaporator case drains. Unfortunately in order to get rid of the smell altogether you will need to have the evaporator, evaporator case and ductwork professionally cleaned. Your dealer should do this for you. Bear in mind in severe cases more than one cleaning may be needed. On a side note. Crawl up under the dashboard in the footwells pull back the top edge of the carpet slightly and see if there is anything growing up there. That's just for peace of mind.
