You can't swap anything from the '96 to the '89. It is not compatible because the '89 has an OBD1 computer and the '96 has the OBDII computer.

Yes you can... I am answering this for others who are doing this. The dashes are interchangeable and you will need to move a lot of stuff. Start by removing your 89 windshield. Hopefully it needs replacing. This is not real easy but will save tons of time later. The tricky parts are: different gas tank, airbags(if you care), remove all wiring harnesses, gas pedal... Through away all the renix parts. Join the Comanche club online. Because you will have questions that can’t be answered here. Good luck

PS. I have a 1989 MJ and am currently doing this swap. The 96 Dana 30 is what you want in front but your 89 Dana 35 keep in back. Various reasons. Check the gears. Remove diff, on ring gear look for the numbers 39-11 would be 3.55 gears.etc... they will need to match. Back to the tranny question. Yes, but you will need 96 TC. That should work. Or SYE and a new driveshaft ...Which isn’t expensive and will eliminate some problems because we know you want a little lift and bigger tires...
