2006 Tahoe 5.3 oil pressure fluctuating

Asked by Bigbear1991 Feb 25, 2018 at 12:27 AM about the 2006 Chevrolet Tahoe Z71 RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I crank my truck the oil pressure tops out at
80, when I drive and get on it a little it shoots down
to zero. When I slow down it goes back up to 80.
Motor isn't making any strange noises at all. Is it
the oil sending unit??

If you have a basic multimeter (that can test ohms and volts) you can test the unit, plenty of guides for such online. Google: "how to test oil sending unit". If you're still uncertain install a mechanical oil pressure gauge, either temporarily or permanently.

Have you pulled the dipstick and actually checked the oil level?

Yes I have pulled to oil stick. I have been around cars my whole life. I'm no master mechanic but I do know maintenance and can repair most things. My problem is diagnostics.

This happened to my 2005. You have one or several problems in your oil pan. Build up around the pickup tube can cause this and also the O ring to the pick up tube can cause this and the oil pressure sensor..My tahoe would shoot up then back down then back up and down it was like watching a RPM Gauge ...Drop the oil pan clean all the carbon, change the o ring with the pickup tube and get a new oil pressure sensor and that should fix it. I'm not a professional but this did correct the problem with my Tahoe and after researching tahoes and Silverados are notorious for the problem

Its an expensive job if you hire someone, depending on how bad the build up is. Will run you 700-850..
