How can I get rid of a cat urine odor in my car ac?

Asked by Aug 08, 2015 at 09:06 AM about the 2014 Toyota RAV4 LE

Question type: General

When I turn on the ac, there is a definite cat urine odor.  It seems to decrease after the
ac's been on for 5 mins or so.  I don't own a cat and no cats have been in my car.  Could
the underside have been sprayed?  If so, how can I get rid of it?  I've already had a
complete exterior wash.

Try a new air filter

You might have a build up of bacteria on the A/C Evaporator fins within the car. This is due to not allowing fresh/vent air to recirculate over the coils after you run the AC. I always turn off the AC a min or 2 after you turn off the car. But you will need to clean it off. Lysol or Ozium are good products. You will need to spray the product into the cars air inlet past the blower motor. If you can't access from the inside of the car, outside is an option as shown on this site.....https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=VrVc_FXrbHY

Replace the cabin air filter and check for for a clogged condensation drain.
