dealer mark up : used car

Asked by Jul 23, 2017 at 02:43 PM about the 2014 Toyota Corolla LE Plus

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

I have been pricing cars for 3 months.  I have found 2 cars that I am going to
negotiate for.  I am really nervous about not getting a good deal.  Approximately
how much mark up do dealers get for used cars ?

I would offer about 15% less and go from there. Do research online to see what cars are worth. I am sure there are apps for the Blue Book, Edmund's, Car Gurus etc.

Most dealers will stick close to the retail blue book values, if the rig is especially nice they will try to get more but even that sometimes doesn't work for them. Find the vehicles you like then do an internet search on them, find out the values, problems, and reviews, then when you have decided on one have it checked over by your mechanic, it is money well spent and you won't wind up with someone else's problem vehicle. Then after all that then shoot them an offer and see what happens.

Gosh, Thank you. 15% less is a big difference . I am anxious but excited. I would hire one of you to go with me, if that were possible At 68 years old, it is scary to wheel & deal. Again, thank you

Good luck and watch out for the closer guy who will try to soak you for warranties, undercoating, paint sealants, security systems etc.
