When you turn the key to the "on" position, can you hear the fuel pump kick on?

And before doing anything to the fuel pump, check the fuel pump relay first.

When you run low or out of gas, the fuel pump gets hot and can burn out. But also there is a strainer in the tank to filter out crap floating in the bottom of the tank. When you turn the key on, off, you should be able to hear the fuel pump run and prime up, then turn off. If it does not make sure it is getting power to run to insure it is not the relay or fuse. Change out the fuel filter if you hear the fuel pump running and priming up, should be changed anyway. Otherwise you will have to drop the gas tank in-order to to get at the fuel pump and strainer.
