Undercoating

Question type: Car Customization

I purchased a 2014.5 Toyota Camry XLE (no longer a Ford Owner). It has
some rust on the bottom. I live in WNY and was considering having it
undercoated, but not at the dealer. Is it worth it to do this now or is it a waste
of money?

LOOK UP (POR15)....MY CHEVELLE WAS 52 YEARS OLD..LOOKED BRAND NEW UNDER THERE..IT WORKS..THEN YOU COULD ADD THE THICKER UNDER COATING/SOUND STUFF..IF YOU WANTED

you can get some rubberized undercoating and do it yourself. Just mask off where you don't want it to spray, wear safety goggles and give it a try. I'd use a can of high temp rustoleom for any part that is extremely hot (exhaust manifold / cats) where the undercoating could melt

Probably a waste of money.

Like Kelly mentioned about his Chevelle, I undercoated my Mustang after the first week of purchase and it slowed down the rust saving the strut towers. It's 30 years old this month. But for a Camry? I agree with Bob, save your money for other things.

I guess I should elaborate a bit. Putting undercoating on a new vehicle is entirely different than spraying undercoating over the rust of a used car. Undercoating over rust, even light rust, will just cover up the rust. The rust will still slowly be eating away underneath the undercoating. If the rust is neutralized and you tend to keep cars for a very long time then undercoating might be a good bet.

I hope to keep this car for until it reaches around 150,000 miles unless something major goes wrong. I'm new to car buying. I had company cars before and I leased them after that. So, should I stay away from undercoating with those goals in mind. The rust is minimal, but I don't plan on keeping the car for 50 years.
