This seems to be a constant problem with the Ford Escort and Focus. All I can tell you, and is no consolation, that three years ago my 2000 Escort developed the same problem which is worst with AC running. I have replaced motor mounts, EGR module, EGR module control switch, oxygen sensors, MAS sensor, plugs and wires and clean the air control valve in engine.
