What is the posible problem on the torque converter lock up.

Asked by Dec 15, 2015 at 07:19 PM about the 2010 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The transmission goes into over drive at slow speeds and the converter lockup comes on and shutters as the engine is lugging. Even at 55 it will do the same thing unless you stomp on the throttle. Also the Overdrive switch will not work when  pushed in, not even a light on the dash.

How slow is slow? It's supposed to shift into od at 45ish. If the od switch doesn't work then there is something that can be diagnosed in the transmission with the proper equipment. How many miles on the car? When it shifts into od does it feel like driving over a washboard until its fully engaged. If it's doing the washboard thing and has no other internal faults its time for a trans flush. have you verified that the od switch isn't shifting the trans out of od and into 3rd while at a steady 60mph cruise, it does have a bulb that can burn out is why I ask.

Torque Converter Clutch Solinold

It's trying to go in overdrive at 30 miles an hour. There are 113,000 on the car but 7689 hours as it is a sad unit.

It can shift into od @30mph under light load. If its happening under heavy acceleration there may be a problem with one of the speed sensors in the trans. That is all electrical and will require hooking up to it for an actual diagnosis. there are some things that can have a part or two thrown at it without any consequences but when you go inside a trans it isn't cheap. The parts may not be expensive but getting there is.
