Is there a difference between the dimmer switch in a regular 2000 Crown Victoria and the same year Police Interceptor dimmer switch?

should not be any difference . Take it to the parts store with you so you can verify before purchase.

if it looks like the second one, then yes the mechanic was right. The dimmer wheel is different. Should pop right out with a small removal tool or screw driver. unplug and take it with you.
