Problem with outside temperature gauge

Asked by Jan 24, 2017 at 01:55 PM about the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro 2SS Convertible RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I recently bought a pre-owned certified 2014 Camaro with less than 2,000. I have driven it about 1,800 miles since purchasing it in October. I live in Austin, Texas and drive in rush hour traffic. Last week, as I was driving home after 5 pm on the highway in stop and go traffic with the AC running, I noticed that the outside temperature that projects a reading on the windshield went up gradually and quickly to 130 degrees. It was only 60 degrees outside. Naturally, I was alarmed. The car's temperature needle was normal. I started fiddling with my AC setting. I turned it off completely and the temperature started dropping. Once I cleared traffic and was driving at 50 miles /hour or more the temperature started dropping quickly almost back to normal. Still a few degrees above what my smart phone said. It happened again the next few days under the same conditions. The AC refused to start one of the days. So I took it to the dealer on Saturday and today they called me to come pick it up and said they did a diagnostic but couldn't find anything wrong. They could not duplicate the problem. Of course, I told them they had to drive it under the same conditions that triggered the problem but they weren't going to do it.

My guess is that the temperature sensor is going bad.

May want to just change the outside temperature sensor. And it's not like it is all that accurate anyway. Heat from the motor, sun shining on it, there are factors to consider.

Interesting that the dealer wouldn't just change the temperature sensor. Still warranty-covered anyway. I've never had this problem with any other car so it is of notice especially since it coincides with certain road conditions.
