my dodge dakota shifts way to late going from 3rd to 4th then into over drive

While getting on the freeway my tranny has a hard time going thru gears I have
the 5.9 liter 360. V8 and when it does get into the overdrive gear it runs good all
the gears work just fine when it shifts gears it's an automatic transmission I
have to really rev up the r.p.ms befor it will shift a specially going into over drive
and not shur what to do first to correct it please I need some input befor it gets
worse thanks

You might want to have the codes pulled first, you looking for any transmission codes that would indicate a control or solenoid problem, and fix those first, if there are no codes then I would service the trans and add a quart of TransX and then fill to specs, this will clean up the valve body's internals and soften the seals so the shift point pressures can come back to near normal, if the TransX works after a week or so of driving then be aware that you will eventually have to rebuild or replace the transmission.
