Wisconsin Car Title
My Nephew and I have been searching for a car for us to
work on and refurbish together. He found one in
Wisconsin. It's at a small used car dealership, looks good,
and the price is right. It's a 1985 model, one owner, low
miles. But the dealer has no title! I've carfaxed it and run it
through NCIB. There's no record of theft or anything else
unusual. The dealer has confermed he bought it at
auction, as the carfax states, but didn't get a title. He does
have keys. The last time the previous owner renewed the
registration was 2010. Do all cars in Wisconsin require
titles? Some States exempt older cars and can be sold
with a bill of sale snd/or transferable registration only. Is
Wisconsin one of those States? NJ will only accept a car
sold on a bill of sale if the state the car is coming from
doesn't issue titles or the particular vehicle is exempt due
to age, etc. I can't find anything on Wisconsin's DOT
website to indicate that this car is exempt from titling. Any
information is greatly appreciated. As I explained to Don,
my Nephew, no sense in getting it if we can't title it.
Thanks very much!
Thanks very much for the input. I appreciate it! I did some further digging on this car and the VIN popped up on a salvage vehicle website. It appears that it was issued a Wisconsin Junk Title. Doesn't give a date but indicated the car had 160,009 miles on it, not 60,XXX. Why this doesn't show up on the carfax is beyond me. I also ran the VIN through two other vehicle history report sites and found nothing. There's definitely something not right about this car so we're going to pass on it. Thanks again. -Jim
