door mechanism will not engage an allow door to be engaged and closed

Is the door drooping? Get a door hinge repair kit. Open the door and use a floor jack to hold it at the proper height while you replace the hinge's pin and bushings. If the door is not drooping, and the lock mechanism just wont engage, then spray it with a graphite lube.
