how do you work the four wheel drive on a 1989 Ford Ranger 2.9 Liter? It only has the the buttons, no gear shift or hubs to lock.

It's fully electronic then. If the system won't engage by pressing the button(s) there's a problem with the system. Check the fuses first. HTH. -Jim
