Will a E4OD C6 transmission from a 1989 4WD work in the same year 2WD?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have a 1989 F-250 2WD that someone put a C3 transmission in because the original went bad. I have found a rebuilt E40D, but its out of a 4WD? Is it a direct swap or at least swap with parts?

Won't work cause the 4x4 version has a different tail housing. The 4x4 has a transfer case bolted onto the back of the transmission and the rear drive shaft connects to the transfer case. In a 2 wheel drive the drive shaft connects to the rear of the transmission. Also the main shaft in these transmissions will be different length.
