How can he get he get the rest of the switch out to put the new switch in?

My son was changing the ignition switch on his 1988 Ford F150 because he
lost the key but the end of the ignition switch broke and he cant get it out to
put the new ignition switch in.

Is he replacing the ignition switch or the ignition lock cylinder? If he lost the key, no need to replace the switch, just the lock cylinder that comes with a new key. Not sure what broke, can you post a pic?
