Don't know if it concerns an 87, but I had a hopped up grand torino sport back in the middle 70's that would do the same thing. It was the power pack attached to the fender well on the driver's side. The way I discovered it was a mechanic said to place a jug of water in the trunk. When it stopped pour the cool water slowly over the back to cool it off. If it restarted, replace the pack. Well, that did it. unfortunately the pack cost 80 bucks back then. Check and see if you have one, a little smaller and shapped like a cigar box, about 1/2 as thick.
