At any speed, and while the cruise control is engaged, the transmission cycles in and out
of overdrive about every 5 seconds resulting in an approximate increase of 600 r.p.m. each
time.

Your overdrive band might be burned requiring a transmission rebuild.

First thing, check your fluid. Hopefully it will be low or very dirty, in which case a fluid and filter change might do. Otherwise, see Tom;s answer.

You may be feeling the torque converter locking and unlocking errantly. When this transmission first hit the market, I thought it was a 6 speed the way it shifts, engages the torque converter, disengages it, shifts and re-engages it. Still, You may have an internal transmission concern.
