trying to crank ....

Have 1991 dodge shadow ....  replaced a valve gasket,  cause oil was leaking when
trying to crank it....  can that cause it not wanting to stay cranked?

I don't think so. Something else must be wrong. An engine will usually start even if it is pumping lots of oil out until it runs out of oil. Do you have any more information?
