1992 base, auto tranny cuts out at 40mph.

around 40-45 mph the transmission drops out of gear and pops back in around 25-30mph. any ideas on the cause??

Sounds like you have some wear inside your transmission. Maybe burned up clutches or a bad torque convertor, can't say without tearing it down. So your looking at a rebuild.

uhm, price range on a rebuild?? 1000-1500?

Have the car looked at by a competent mechanic for accurate diagnosis, but a rebuild should run you closer to the $1500 and maybe more if your in the states.
