Forgot to install cam button on my 1985 Toro with 307 how long until it breaks something

Not long, that button keeps the cam from floating back and forth, it can tear up,the distributor drive and driven gears, loose those and you've lost oil pressure, also the cam sprocket and chain can be damaged.

Wouldn't the cam plate hold it?

It would keep it from walking all the way out, but if it is hit just right it can damage the cam lobes.
