Column Shifter Stuck

Asked by Dec 28, 2013 at 08:45 PM about the 1989 Buick Reatta STD Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

1989 Buick Reatta column shifter is stuck in park. The car can turn on, so it is not a dead battery. It appears as though one of the pulleys attached to the engine stops. What can I do?

Try this, turn the ignition to the off position (just far enough to unlock the steering wheel). Depress the brake and try to shift it out of park. If this works then the brake/ shifter interlock solenoid is bad. You'll be able to start the car in neutral. But as I said earlier keep your foot on the brake. HTH. -Jim
