Why will my 1994 dodge Dakota not run at steady speed without backfireing?

I'd look for a vacuum leak...one might use a little carburetor cleaner and with the straw point at the intake gasket...sometimes these will whistle on the suction draw~...anyways the air/fuel mix is interrupted possibly by a leaking intake gasket or vacuum line has cracked or fallen off...again causing the computer to cycle~
