Above the heater box. Every once in awhile the GEM fails but it is not common, the most common failure is the transfer case shift motor, a simple test is to lightly tap on the motor while someone pushes the 4X4 high button, if it shifts into gear then the motor is bad, if not then you need to check the wiring, the first place to check is the section from the shift motor right up to the place where it goes through the floor.
