1995 Dodge Dakota: inoperative fuel gauge suddenly came to life...momentarily...when jumpers were cross-wired on battery terminals. When jumper polarity was corrected, gauge returned to...inert. Fix?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Does this suggest reversed polarity in the wiring of sending unit or gauge?

Was this sending unit a replacement for the stock unit? If so, it may indeed be wired backwards. If it is the stock unit that quit working, the problem may lie in a bad ground, cross-wiring the jumper cables may have caused a voltage spike that gave it momentary life. I'm surprised you didn't fry a fusible link with the cables on backwards, but at least it help you find a potential problem with the sending unit.
