why does the light on my radio go out when I turn on the headlights and what do I do about it

When I turn on the headlights the radio goes black if I turn the lights
off it lights back up

Check you dimmer switch, to see that you don't have it dimmed to nothing. Those lights are normally on in daytime and not adjustable, but with lights on they can be dimmed. Turn the trip odometer button but don't push it in.

http://www.toyota.com/t3Portal/document/om/OM12E11U/pdf/sec_02-02.pdf Page 151.Some 2013 Corollas do not have daytime instrument cluster lights, only come on with headlights and that knob, or button the trip odometer is the dimmer for "panel' radio, climate controls and shifter gear lighting.

Checked all that it is on at night with the lights on but u can barely see it.

Ok...then maybe the dimmer is bad. It's just a rheostat or potentiometer, not sure which but they are almost the same thing anyway. But a 2013 is far too soon to have it worn out.... has the car been exposed to excessive moisture in the cabin?
