I'm having a real hard time shifting into park and reverse

I have a automatic tranny on the steering column

Are you pressing hard on the brake peddle? There's a sensor that will allow you to release the gear shift after the engine starts but only with your foot on the brake peddle. That's so you can't start the car in reverse and run someone over.
