Engine racing

Asked by Sep 07, 2016 at 07:33 AM about the 1998 Dodge Durango 4 Dr SLT 4WD SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Long story  my son bumped a table in back yard and damaged passenger
side headlight  when he got out he turn car off. But wanted to check to see if
lights work so he turned key just enough to check. But never put it back   So
14 hrs later when I got in Durango I notice key was still at that position. Of
course battery was completely dead. When later in day I got it jumped engine
was racing and wouldn't go down. They put it in gear and it wanted to take off
My question is this couldn't be cause of the jump. But is it cause he left key in
that position for so long and what can I do

Did you charge the battery back up yet and restart it to see if it idles fine?

I wonder if since the battery was totally dead that maybe the ecu is relearning the idle and other parameters? Also as Tom asked, is the battery charged up?

Ok I was told to unhook battery and let sit for at least an hour. Two hours later I reconnected battery and started it up Knock on wood it's running well So thank you guys and hopefully my Durango will keep running well
